Water Supply Plant

Constructed and Placed online in 1972, expanded 2001 - Water Source - Seneca Lake

General Information

Treating the water properly has become more of a challenge over the years, primarily as a result of Zebra Mussels and their by- products, as well as more stringent EPA requirements.

We filter our water, predisinfect it with chlorine dioxide. We seasonally add powdered activated carbon to raw water. The finished product is then disinfected with chlorine dioxide and monochloramine before entering the Distribution System for consumption.

We perform in- house bacteriological testing in our NYS certified lab. All other required testing is done by a private lab. Water quality test results have been and continue to be without violations. We meet or exceed EPA and NYS Health Department requirements.

• We pump an average of 1.25 MGD (million gallons / day)
• We have 3 full time and 2 part time employees
• We service the entire Village of Waterloo
• We also service Border City, the Town of Waterloo (Burgess Rd.), the Town of Junius which includes the Finger Lakes Outlet Center and NYS Thruway Rest Area (Junius Ponds), the Fayette Water District #1 near the Water Plant on Seneca Lake, Varick on Seneca Lake, Romulus Hamlet, Sampson State Park, Hamlet of Fayette and the Seneca Army Depot Activity.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia Information

New York State law requires water suppliers to notify their customers about the risks from cryptosporidium and giardia. Cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis are intestinal illnesses caused by microscoopic parasites. Cryptosporidiosis can be very serious for people with weak immune systems, such as chemotherapy, dialysis or transplant patients, and people with Crohn's disease or HIV infection. People with weak immune systems should discuss with their health care providers the need to take extra precautions such as boiling water, using certified bottled water or a specially approved home filter. Individuals who think they may have cryptosporidiosis or giardiasis should contact their health care provider immediately.

Samples for Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum are taken at the water treatments plant's raw water intake. The results have been negative for all years sampled (1994 - 1999).
